A peshtemal (also spelled pestemal, and known as a fouta or hammam towel) is the original Turkish bath towel: a large, flat-woven cotton sheet used in hammams for centuries. Unlike thick terry towels, a peshtemal is lightweight and thin, so it dries fast, folds down small enough to slip into any bag, and becomes softer and more absorbent with every wash.
