What is Laurel Berry Oil?

Laurel Berry Oil — also known as bay laurel berry oil — is a premium specialty oil extracted from the fruit of the Laurus nobilis tree. As a leading Turkish laurel berry oil supplier, we produce this oil in Hatay, Turkey, where the finest laurel berries grow. It has been treasured for centuries as the signature ingredient in traditional Aleppo soap and is highly valued as a laurel berry oil for cosmetics and skincare formulations.

Unlike Laurel Leaf Essential Oil (steam-distilled from leaves), laurel berry oil from Turkey is produced through a time-honored water-extraction process. Hand-harvested berries are boiled until seeds and pulp separate, allowing the nutrient-rich oil to float to the surface.

Not Cold Pressed — Traditional Water Extraction

Authentic laurel berry oil is NOT cold pressed. It requires a traditional water-extraction method used for centuries:

  • Hand Harvesting: Mature laurus nobilis berries picked November-January at peak oil content
  • Traditional Boiling: Berries boiled in large cauldrons, separating seeds from oil
  • Natural Separation: Oil floats to surface, carefully skimmed by hand
  • Settling & Filtration: Natural settling for weeks, then filtered

This method is what produces the oil traditionally used in Aleppo soap, giving the finished bar its distinctive creamy lather and gentle cleansing character.

Representative Fatty Acid Profile

Determined by gas chromatography (% m/m methyl esters). The fatty acid composition is what confirms this material is a fixed berry oil rather than a leaf essential oil. Composition varies with harvest season, geographic origin and extraction, so treat the range as the specification and the batch column as one worked example.

Fatty acid composition of laurel berry oil, typical range and reference batch
Fatty acid Typical range (%) Batch LBY2025 (%)
Lauric acid (C12:0) 10 – 30 13.57
Myristic acid (C14:0) < 2 0.72
Palmitic acid (C16:0) 5 – 25 17.00
Stearic acid (C18:0) < 2 1.51
Oleic acid (C18:1) 30 – 50 39.24

Saponification Values for Soap Makers

Saponification value (documented)
180 – 220 mg KOH/g · batch 201.5 mg KOH/g
SAP KOH (g KOH per g oil)
0.180 – 0.220 · typical 0.202
SAP NaOH (g NaOH per g oil) — calculated
0.128 – 0.157 · typical 0.144

KOH values are taken directly from the saponification value on our TDS and COA. NaOH values are the standard molar conversion (× 40.00 / 56.11) and are provided for soapmaking calculators — always run your own lye calculation and confirm against the COA of the batch you receive.

Physical State and Handling

Liquid at normal ambient temperature. Because of its naturally high saturated fatty acid content (lauric + palmitic + stearic), the oil may thicken, cloud or partially solidify when stored cool. This is normal for authentic laurel berry oil — warm gently and mix to return it to a uniform liquid before use.

Applications for Soap Makers

  • Aleppo Soap Production: Essential for authentic formulations (5%, 10%, 20%, 40% laurel)
  • Luxury Soap Formulations: Creates premium, gentle cleansing bars
  • Cold & Hot Process: Suitable for all soap-making methods
  • Natural Saponification: High unsaponifiables and a rich fatty acid profile

Laurel Berry Oil for Cosmetic Formulations

Beyond soap making, laurel berry oil for cosmetics is gaining demand in the natural personal care industry. Formulators choose bay laurel berry oil for its distinctive fatty acid profile — notably the combination of lauric acid with a high oleic and linoleic fraction shown in the table above.

  • Conditioning Formulations: Used as an emollient ingredient in natural moisturizing products
  • Shampoo & Hair Bars: Used in traditional personal care and shampoo bar formulations
  • Massage & Body Oils: A warming, aromatic carrier oil for body care blends
  • Specialty Personal Care: Suited to premium, high-laurel personal care product lines
